Rubloff Hall, although appearing similar to other residence halls, is the first “green” and LEED Gold certified buildings on campus here at Saint Xavier University. By using state of the art technology, aiming to reduce our carbon footprint, Rubloff Hall also saves $55,000 annually consuming 53% less energy than other facilities at SXU. The Building Management System, or brain of the building, adapts to the needs of a room through the measurement of CO2 emitted featuring a side air ventilation system that allows the air to flow upward keeping a constant stream of fresh, clean air to force out older air through vents located higher on the walls.
O’Brien Hall, LEED Gold certified, succeeds the example of Rubloff Hall to offer quality living quarters for students without increasing the carbon footprint. The most advanced technology has been brought into the mechanical room to run the building efficiently based on its demand of water or electric usage allowing for the double life span of the machinery that maintains optimal comfort levels. The SMARDT Chiller, the air conditioning unit for O’Brien Hall, consists of a magnetic rod and two ball bearings fitting into a small room which in return frees up space to house more people or serve another purpose.
